Why channeling activities are important

Channeling is drawing a line between two guiding lines. Channeling tasks stimulate child’s eye - hand coordination. When children draw lines in the middle of a restrained path, they simultaneously follow and compare their evolving lines with boundary lines.

 

Guiding lines determine the path in the middle of which a child must draw a line. When the child continuously checks the distance of the line from guiding lines, fine-motor hand movement control is reinforced.

 

Channeling activities start with wide and straight paths, and then gradually change to narrow and curvy paths as the child’s skill level improves. These activities strengthen visual-motor integration and fine-motor hand and fingers movements control. This processes lead to acquisition of basic graphomotor, fine-motor and pre-writing skills and competences which will later play important role in development of writing and other specific fine-motor skills.

 

Worksheets and activities in this workbook

Activities in this workbook's 60 worksheets strengthen children’s visual-motor integration and basic graphomotor skills by asking children to draw paths between the guiding lines (in the middle of the provided paths). In some activities helping dotted lines are provided to help children with drawing.

 

Tasks difficulty increase throughout the workbook by:

  • increased complexity of lines,

  • decreased space between the guiding lines,

  • decreased density of dots in helping lines.
