Why maze solving activities are important for children
Activities with mazes stimulate development of executive functioning skills and strengthen visual-motor integration. When children solve mazes and their eyes scan them in order to find possible solutions, their brains search for various strategies and apply most promising ones in particular tasks. Deciding between different strategies (e.g. choosing between starting from the beginning or working backwards from the end of the maze) require and develop their executive functioning skills.
Mazes stimulate hand-eye coordination and hand/fingers fine-motor control. Drawing through the maze without hitting the lines also lead to greater grip control.
Solving mazes contribute to building patience and frustration tolerance in children. Mazes require children to take their time rather than rushing. As they progress towards bumping into border lines less and less, their confidence is growing as well.
Worksheets and activities in this workbook
Mazes in this workbook range from easy to gradually more challenging ones. It is recommended for a child to start with a simple maze to provide immediate success, and then work towards more challenging tasks.
Instead of a one-step process children can solve mazes in three steps: first by moving a finger over the path, then by a pencil, and at last with the marker. Solving the same maze task three times allow the required skills and learned strategies to sink-in better.
One way to make a maze more challenging is solving it in a single stroke without stopping or going back. This way children can gradually move from trial and error strategies towards planning the solutions in advance in their heads.
