Why connecting dots activities are important

Drawing straight lines between dots stimulate child’s eye - hand coordination. When a child draws a line from one to another dot his or her eyes follow the evolving line and simultaneously compare its direction with the position of the target dot. This comparison is followed by hand and fingers micro-movements to correct the direction towards the intended target dot. The whole process strengthen visual-motor integration and fine-motor hand and fingers movements control. 

 

Drawing lines between dots activities stimulate acquisition of space concepts which later play important role in development of writing, drawing, and other important graphomotor and fine-motor skills. Tasks in which children look for the shortest distance between different dots during drawing stimulate visual discrimination; tasks involving directions changes contribute to the development of micro-movements perception and kinestetic awareness.

Worksheets and activities in this workbook

Activities in this workbook are designed for strengthening children’s visual-motor integration and basic graphomotor skills by asking children to connect two or more dots set in a limited space.

Activities and tasks follow from easier to more complex and difficult ones, their difficulty being increased in three ways:

  • by increasing number of dots in a series (from two dots upwards),

  • by increasing distance between dots,

  • by increasing angles between lines to be drawn between dots.
